On 2 June 2014, the Romanian Senate adopted a bill declaring 24 January - the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities - a national holiday. On 3 December, the Chamber of Deputies adopted Law no. 171/2014 for the declaration of 24 January - the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, according to which central and local public administration authorities may organize and support logistically and materially cultural and artistic events dedicated to this day.
On 16 December 2014, President Traian Băsescu signed Decree no. 901 on the promulgation of the Law for the declaration of 24 January - the Day of the Unification of the Romanian Principalities as a national holiday, published in the Official Gazette no. 922/18 December 2014. On 6 September 2016, the Plenum of the Chamber of Deputies adopted a draft law, supplementing the Labour Code, declaring 24 January - the Day of the Unification of the Romanian Principalities a non-working holiday.
