Grandparents' Day has been celebrated every year in Mexico on August 28 since 1983, when this date was officially established as a sign of recognition for their great work in the family and in society.
Before the formalization of this commemoration, there was already a tradition of dedicating a day to the great ones of the home. It is not very well known to what time this celebration dates back. Instead, there are three different versions of its possible origin.
One of them indicates that August 28 was chosen during the government of Porfirio Díaz, in which it was celebrated in conjunction with the feast of San Agustín de Hipona.
Another version indicates that the date is taken from 1957, thanks to a medical congress chaired by doctors Manuel Pelayo and Guillermo Marroquín, who proposed the date for August 28.
The third version, one of the best known, attributes the merit to the radio host Edgar Gaytán, who in his program “la hora azul” instituted August 28 as a day to dedicate to the elderly.
Since 1998, August 28 was established in our country as Elder's Day. Instead, this denomination has been undergoing different changes in order to use an inclusive language. Today, it is known as National Seniors Day, as this designation includes both grandfathers and grandmothers, as well as all seniors who are not grandfathers or grandmothers.
