Burkina Faso Revolution Day

Burkina Faso Revolution Day is held on August 4. Between 1992 and 2000, this day was considered a public holiday and was dedicated to the anniversary of the military coup in 1983. Thomas Sankara, a Burkinabe military officer, Marxist revolutionary and pan-Africanist president, is often referred to as the “African Che Guevara” due to his radical left-wing policies. He was President of Burkina Faso from his coup in 1983 until his deposition and mysterious death in 1987. Sankara was also a talented guitarist, and even wrote Burkina Faso’s national anthem, Ditanye.
Burkina Faso was part of the Mossi Kingdom. Country, previously known as Upper Volta, was once part of French West Africa since 1896 until 1960. The first people to settle in the area are the Mossi people in the 11th and 13th century.
Burkina Faso is home to the largest elephant population in West Africa. The country has 4 national parks, 1 UNESCO Biosphere reserve, 3 Complete Reserves, 6 Partial Reserves and 10 protected forests. It is one the poorest countries in the world with around 44% of its population living under the poverty line.
Conflict affects most of the regions in Burkina Faso, especially in bordering areas in the north and east of the country and intensifies in western and southern regions. 1.7 million people are internally displaced due to violence, including almost 900,000 children as of September 2022, according to the government.
