The sector has often been the site of border skirmishes between the two countries, and the Kargil War was the largest and deadliest of these clashes. The conflict began in early May when the Indian military learned that Pakistani fighters had infiltrated the Indian-administered territory.
A large number of rockets and bombs were used in this war. About two lakh fifty thousand shells, bombs, and rockets were fired. Approximately 5,000 artillery shells, mortar bombs, and rockets were fired daily from 300 guns, mortars, and MBRLs while 9,000 shells were fired the day Tiger Hill was regained.
One of the heroes of this battle, Captain Vikram Batra, PVC (9 September 1974 – 7 July 1999) was an officer of the Indian Army, posthumously awarded with the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest and most prestigious award for valour, for his actions during the 1999 Kargil War in Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
