26 July - Day of National Significance in Barbados
As the first Caribbean landfall from Europe and Africa, Barbados has functioned since the late 17th century as a major link between western Europe (mainly Great Britain), eastern Caribbean territories, and parts of the South American mainland. Holetown was the first settlement in Barbados.
On July 26 - a date of national commemoration of that country for the labor strikes that took place on that date in 1937, consequences of the crisis in the sugar global market after the great depression resulting from the collapse of the financial market.
Resolution (2015) encourages Barbadians to fully appreciate the importance and meaning of July 26th – the Day of National Significance and all it symbolises; and re-affirms its commitment to the high ideals of good governance and social justice for all as a lasting legacy from the 1937 Disturbances.
