5 July - Tynwald Day
Tynwald is the parliament of the Isle of Man, which was founded in 979.
The Isle of Man is thought to take its name from Manannán, a Celtic sea god who was said to defend the island by conjuring mists to cloak it from invaders. While the Isle Of Man is part of the British Isles, it is in fact its own autonomous entity with its own self-governing parliament. Not only that, it's actually the longest continuously running parliament in the world, stretching back over 1,000 years!
The British Government is responsible for the laws covering British citizenship through the British Nationality Act 1981 (an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom) which extends to the Isle of Man.
Schengen visas are not valid in the Isle of Man and cannot be issued by the Isle of Man Immigration Office. Holders of a valid visa for the UK or the Channel Islands can travel freely around the Common Travel Area without the need for applying for a specific visa for the Isle of Man.
