Heroes' Day honors those who fought in Zambia's long struggle for independence. In more recent years, the list of national heroes and heroines has been expanded to include people from all walks of life who have contributed heroically to the nation’s advancement. For example, in 2004 Zambian vice-president Nevers Mumba proposed that Heroes Day be refocused to include the members of the Zambian soccer team who died in a plane crash in 1993. Eighteen members of the winning team died when the Zambian Air Force jet they were riding in crashed off the coast of Gabon.
All these deserve recognition and are worthy to be considered heroes and have a place in Zambia’s history. Therefore, Heroes Day is an occasion for honouring people who have served the country in various capacities. Zambians celebrate Heroes Day with a solemn pride in the heroism of those who have served the country diligently.
