Commemorating children killed protesting in Soweto in 1976. On 16 June 1976 In Soweto, South Africa, thousands of black schoolchildren took to the streets to protest about the inferior quality of their education and to demand their right to be taught in their own language. It was designated as Day of the African Child in 1991 by the African Union and every year events are organised to promote children’s rights. By the year 2050 almost one in three of the world’s children under 18 will be African.
