Independence Day in Brunei, Cameroon, Haiti, Sudan

Subsequent treaties with the United Kingdom in 1971 and 1979 set the timeline for independence, with Brunei set to gain full autonomy over its affairs on January 1, 1984. The road to independence began in 1959 when the Constitution Agreement was signed with the UK, abolishing the residency and providing for internal self-rule, with Britain remaining in charge of defence and foreign affairs.

In a national referendum on 20 May 1972, Cameroonians voted for a unitary state as opposed to the existing federal state. The United Nations Trust Territory known as French Cameroun achieved independence from France on 1 January 1960, and British Southern Cameroons changed status from a Trusteeship under British administration to a federated state within Cameroon on 1 October 1961. The government chose 20 May as Cameroon's National Day to commemorate President Ahmadou Ahidjo's abolishment of the federal system of government in favor of a unitary country in 1972.

Haiti Independence Day is celebrated annually on January 1. This day was set aside to commemorate Haiti's declaration of independence from French colonial rule on January 1, 1804. The declaration of independence had been preceded by many years of a slave revolt called the Haitian Revolution.

The Republic of the Sudan was established as an independent sovereign state on 1 January 1956 upon the termination of the condominium of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, over which sovereignty had been vested jointly in Egypt and the United Kingdom.
