1 June - National Maritime Day in Mexico
National Maritime Day, also known as Mexican Navy Day, was established in 1942 by President Manuel Ávila Camacho. The date of June 1 was chosen because, on this day in 1917, article 32 of the Mexican Constitution was applied for the first time. According to this article, any vessel flying the Mexican naval ensign must be crewed by seamen who are Mexican by birth. Two days later, the first Mexican merchant vessel left the port of Veracruz. The entire crew of the steamer Tabasco was comprised exclusively of native-born Mexicans. It celebrates both the Mexican Navy and the country's civil maritime sectors.
