3 June - Western Australia Day
Western Australia Day (WA Day) celebrates the day British captain Charles Fremantle claimed Western Australia for the British in 1829, setting up the Swan River Colony. While the day was originally called “Foundation Day” (prior to 2012), it has since been renamed to include all Western Australians, including aboriginal communities. The legislation emphasised that the new ‘State Day’ was to be inclusive of all people no matter how long they have called themselves Western Australians. WA Day takes place on the first Monday in June each year.
