30 May - Indian Arrival Day in Trinidad and Tobago
After the emancipation of the enslaved Africans, it was East Indian immigration which proved to be the most important source of labour for the plantations.
Holiday commemorates the arrival of the first indentured labourers from India in May 1845 on a ship named Fatel Razack after a journey of five months, carrying 225 Indians. Trinidad and Tobago was the first country to start this holiday.
Indentured servants played an important economic role in keeping cocoa and sugar plantations thriving after slavery ended and they contributed to the culture. The Fatel Razack brought not only a new labour force to assist in the economic development of Trinidad, but also a new people with a new culture. They have made significant contributions not only in agriculture but all the professions in society.
