21 May - Navy Day in Chile
The Day of Naval Glories (Law 2977 of 1915 established May 21 as "celebration of all the glories the Navy of the Republic") is a holiday that is celebrated in Chile every May 21. Its purpose is to commemorate the anniversary of two naval battles that took place on Wednesday, May 21, 1879: that of Iquique, where the frigate captain Arturo Prat died along with the entire staff of the corvette Esmeralda, sunk by the Peruvian monitor Huáscar in command of the ship's captain Miguel Grau; and Punta Gruesa, where the schooner Covadonga, commanded by Carlos Condell, ran aground the Peruvian armored frigate Independencia, commanded by Juan Guillermo Moore, on the rocks of Punta Gruesa.
In his memory, every May 21 is celebrated with military parades and floral offerings in each city of Chile, the main ceremonies being those carried out in the ports of Valparaíso, Talcahuano —where the Huáscar monitor is anchored— and Iquique.
