It was formed on January 7, 1822, by the American Colonization Society—an event that is commemorated in Liberia each year by the celebration of Pioneer's Day.
The first American freed slaves, led by members of the society, landed in 1822 on Providence Island at the mouth of the Mesurado River. They were followed shortly by Jehudi Ashmun, a white American, who became the real founder of Liberia.
The settlement that had been called Christopolis was renamed Monrovia after the American president, James Monroe, and the colony as a whole was formally called Liberia (the free land).
