Egypt is often described as a sportsman's paradise. The word sport has a modern ring about it but, like most human activities, it is as old as humanity itself. Pharaohs such as Amenhotep II and Thutmose IV were not only patrons but also skilled sportsmen themselves. Unlike ancient Romans, the Egyptians practiced "peaceful" sports aimed at enhancing their fitness and athletic prowess and at providing entertainment.
