The profession of lifeguard requires that the person is trained to monitor, prevent and attend to an event that occurs, providing immediate rescue or first aid as needed.
Lifeguard Day used to be celebrated on February 4, but since 2011 it has been celebrated every February 14.
On February 4, 1978 a lifeguard lost his life while rescuing a swimmer, and this date is commemorated in his honor. The event occurred on February 4, 1978, when lifeguard Guillermo Volpe suffered a heart attack that prevented him from continuing swimming in the sea while he was trying to rescue a swimmer. When he returned to the shore, his companions noticed his absence and found him dead in the water.
Lifeguard Day was changed from February 4 to February 14, because it was considered too sad a date to be a holiday.
