1 February - National Axolotl Day in Mexico
An axolotl is a neotenic larva of some species of ambystomes, amphibians of the family Ambystomidae of the caudate family. The peculiarity of the axolotl is that it reaches sexual maturity and becomes capable of reproduction without transforming into an adult form or undergoing metamorphosis. Conservation status: On the verge of complete extinction.
This commemoration aims to disseminate the importance of the salamander in the Mexican ecosystem and culture. For this reason, institutions and officials hold exhibitions and disseminate information about salamanders and why it is important to take care of them.
In 2018, the decree "February 1 National Day of the Mexican axolotl" was entered in the Senate of the Republic, due to the publication of the article "The axolotl genome and the evolution of key tissue formation regulators" in the journal Nature, in which it was discovered that the Mexican axolotl has 32 billion base pairs of DNA, making it the largest genome that has been sequenced in history.
The salamander is a reference of Mexican culture, and in recent years it has been honored in different ways, such as its appearance on the new 50 peso bill. Even the director Alejandro González Iñarritú used the animal as part of his film Bardo, which was released in October 2022.
