It is one of Zimbabwe's most recent popular holidays, instituted in 2017. It is celebrated on February 21, the day of Robert Mugabe's birthday. Although he is no longer in power, the government has decided to keep this holiday. Mugabe played an important role in establishing Zimbabwe as an independent nation. He also had a significant influence on other aspects of the country's politics and therefore it was decided to create a national holiday in his honor. This event is very controversial, due to many of the decisions taken during his mandate.
Recall that Mugabe has been criticized both internally by the opposition and internationally on charges of human rights violations, corruption, failed economic policies, and black racism. His characterization as a dictator is common.
