In Peru, the Day of the Mining Worker has been celebrated every December 5 since 1989, comprising all workers, men and women, who work in metallic and metallurgical mining in companies governed by the General Mining Law.
This important date was announced in 1989, during the last period of Alan Garcia Perez's first term in office, following a nationwide protest by mining workers, led by the leader Saul Cantoral, who forced Garcia's government to sign Supreme Decree No. 031-89-TR in favor of the workers on December 5, 1989. This law covered the mining retirement and its regulations; the minimum mining income; the additional recognition of occupational diseases; the increase of the subsidy to 100% to cover temporary disability; and the development of technical education in places dependent on mining.
