29 November - Feast of St. Saturnino in Pamplona, Spain
Today, November 29, is the feast of San Saturnino, which is the patron saint of Pamplona (although many find it hard to accept that it is not San Fermin). In fact, San Fermín is not the patron saint of Pamplona, but the co-patron saint of Navarre along with San Francisco Javier, whose day is celebrated on December 3, a holiday throughout the region.
San Saturnino is celebrated on November 29 and is a public holiday in the city. On this day numerous festive events are held in honor of the Patron Saint of Pamplona and it is the last outing of the year for the Comparsa de Gigantes y cabezudos.
The Comparsa de gigantes y cabezudos de Pamplona, brings together a group of papier-mâché figures, including giants, big-heads, kilikis and zaldikos, as well as their bearers.
Thus, Saturnino, born in Tolosa, was a missionary who during the third century evangelized the pagan lands of Navarre and baptized about fifty thousand people, including a Roman official named Firmo and his son Fermin (who later became San Fermin).
