12 November - Ambato Independence Day in Ecuador
On November 12, 1820, the city of San Juan Bautista de Ambato, current capital of the province of Tungurahua, proclaimed its independence. This city was founded by Sebastián de Benalcázar in 1535 and, since then, has been known by different names such as Tierrita Linda; Jardín del Ecuador; Ciudad de las Flores, Frutas y el Pan; and Cuna de los Tres Juanes: Juan Montalvo, Juan León Mera and Juan Benigno Vela, intellectuals who have given recognition to the city and the Republic of Ecuador.
The name of the city of Ambato comes from the Kichwa word 'Hambatu' or 'Jambatu', which means tadpole or toad of green and black color; an amphibian that inhabited the entire area of the Ambato River, which crosses through this urban area.
Among the tourist attractions of Ambato are the Parque Provincial de la Familia, the Parque de las Flores, the Jardín Histórico Botánico Atocha-La Liria and the Mirador Cerro Casigana. In addition, as part of its cultural and architectural offerings are the many museums located in the city, such as the Museo Pictórico Edmundo Martínez, the Museo Juan Benigno Vela, the Museo de Pasa, the Casas Museo Juan León Mera and Martínez Holguín, the Quinta de Juan Montalvo, and the Mario Cobo Barona and Pachano Lalama Cultural Centers.
