In Argentina since 2017 through Decree 330/2017 published in the Official Gazette, the third Wednesday of the month of October is established as the "National Day of Fight against Obesity" (Día Nacional de Lucha contra la Obesidad). The objective is to raise awareness about this epidemic and the effects it causes on health.
According to data from the 4th edition of the National Survey of Risk Factors, presented in 2019, 61.6% of people in Argentina were overweight: 36.2% were overweight (defined as body mass index between 25 and 30), and 25.4% were obese (body mass index over 30).
The numbers have been increasing steadily since the first survey was conducted in 2005, when 49% of people were overweight: 34.4% were overweight and only 14.6% obese.
