On August 6, 1998, the Executive Power issued Decree No. 287-98, which establishes October 25 of each year as "National Cooperativism Day" in the Dominican Republic.
On October 1, 1946, Cooperativa Manoguayabo was constituted as the first cooperative in the Dominican Republic, guided by Father Alfonso Chafe and the mentoring of Scarboro priest Rev. Father Johnn Harvey (Pablo) Steele.
On October 25, 1963, Law No. 31-63 was enacted creating the Institute of Development and Cooperative Credit (IDECOOP), formulated by President Juan Bosch, found in the desk of his office after his overthrow on September 25, 1963 and assumed by the Triumvirate as an economic model to combat poverty.
With Cooperativism, strength is given to the seed of participatory democracy, solidarity economy is valued with its good practices, sustainable growth for the sustainability of local development and generate wealth based on the incentive of the culture of savings and responsible credit.
