This profession has its origins in 1948, when the Junta Central de Beneficencia y Asistencia Social formed the Escuela Técnica y Administración Hospitalaria to collaborate in the research and organization of hospitals in country. In 1960 the 1st School of Medical Technology of the University of Chile was founded.
At present, the Hospital Clínico de Magallanes has 44 professional Medical Technologists, whose main task is to perform examinations and procedures for clinical diagnosis and specific treatment of pathologies, performed under approved standards, in order to provide comprehensive care to patients and the community, in the field of promotion, prevention and recovery of health.
Among the tasks performed are the analysis of blood, urine and other fluids in the Clinical Laboratory Responsibility Center (CR); Transfusion, platelet transfusion and separation of hemo-components in the CR Blood Bank; Evaluation of visual status and its alterations, visual acuity and prescription of glasses in the ophthalmology unit; examinations, procedures and treatment for diseases affecting the ear and upper respiratory tract in the Otorhinolaryngology unit; use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation for diagnosis, procedures and treatments in the CR Imaging and Radiotherapy unit.
In addition, his knowledge in health sciences is applied to participate and/or develop research projects according to the scientific method that impacts the community, considering bioethical and biosafety principles.
