8 September - Asturias Day
Asturias Day is the public holiday of the Spanish autonomous community of the Principality of Asturias. It is celebrated on September 8. It celebrates the feast of the Virgin of Covadonga, patron saint of Asturias. The holiday, established by Law 5/1984, of June 28, is celebrated institutionally every year in the locality determined by the Governing Council of the Principality of Asturias.
The Day of Asturias commemorates the Virgin of Covadonga, its patron saint, also known as 'La Santina'. She is credited with the victory against the Arab invasion when they tried to invade the territory of the Principality.
More specifically, this celebration dates back to Visigothic times, when Don Pelayo was fighting against the Arabs who invaded Asturias. It is said that the Virgin helped the Christians by provoking a rockslide that killed the Arab army, thus assisting in the victory of the Battle of Covadonga, considered the beginning of the Reconquest.
