International Journalists' Day

International Journalists' Day is commemorated on September 8 in honor of Czech journalist Julius Fucik, executed by the Nazis on September 8, 1943.

In the Americas, celebrations vary according to events in the countries of the region.

For example, in Argentina, the Day of the Journalist was established in 1938 by the First National Congress of Journalists held in Córdoba, in memory of the first press media with patriotic ideas. On June 7, 1810, Mariano Moreno founded the "Gazeta de Buenos Aires", the first newspaper of the Argentine independence period. The First Junta indicated by decree its foundation because it was necessary to announce to the public the official acts and the foreign and local news. Its first editors were Mariano Moreno, Manuel Belgrano and Juan José Castelli.

Or in Paraguay, the date chosen by the Sindicato de Periodistas del Paraguay (SPP) is related to the publication of the first newspaper in the country, "El Paraguayo Independiente", on April 26, 1845, written entirely by the then president of Paraguay Carlos Antonio López. On that day, but in 1991, journalist Santiago Leguizamón was murdered in the city of Pedro Juan Caballero, a crime attributed to the organized mafia linked to drug trafficking on the border with Brazil. This fact ratified the date as the commemoration date for Paraguayan journalists.
