In sociology, solidarity refers to the feeling and attitude of unity based on common goals or interests; it is a term that refers to helping without receiving anything in return with the application of what is considered good. It also refers to the social ties that bind members of a society together. Some sociologists introduced specific definitions of this term. Among them, one of the most famous was Émile Durkheim.
The International Day of Solidarity is celebrated every year on August 31. This date was chosen in honor of the Polish social movement Solidarity, which was represented in 1980 by the trade union guild 'Solidarność'.
This movement was one of the many responsible for the fall of the Berlin Wall. Moreover, one of its leaders, Lech Walesa, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize because he promoted the ideals of solidarity not only in his home country but all over the world.
Although this celebration has a long history, there is another date officially decreed by UNESCO called International Human Solidarity Day, which is celebrated on December 20.
