27 August - San Atilano Day in Tarazona
Every August 27, the most important figure of the festivities in honor of San Atilano returns to the streets of the city of Tarazona. At 12 noon the Cipotegato leaves from the door of the Town Hall of the city before a crowded square, under a great rain of tomatoes.
The Cipotegato opens the Patron Saint Festival of Tarazona in honor of San Atilano, which is celebrated from August 27 to September 1, being the day of the Main Festival on the 28th, commemorating the transfer of the relics of the Saint to City, an event that took place in the year 1644.
Until then, the Main Festival of the City was centered in the Day of the Corpus Christie, festivity of great religious solemnity, externalized by a ceremonious liturgy, the great pomp of the Procession and abundant popular celebrations. From then on (1644), the date and reason for the Fiesta Mayor changed, not only because of the importance of the possession of a relic of the Patron Saint, but also to better adapt to the calendar of agricultural work, since the Corpus coincides with the harvest season, and at the end of August the work in the fields is not so imperative.
