26 August - Namibia Day
On December 12, 1973, the United Nations General Assembly decided to declare August 26 each year as Namibia Day.
On the same day, the United Nations "strongly condemns South Africa for its persistent refusal to withdraw from the international territory of Namibia and for its efforts to consolidate its illegal occupation through the intensification of repression and the imposition of its policy of apartheid and the fragmentation of the territory into Bantustans". It also demands that South Africa immediately withdraw all its military forces and administration from Namibia in order to enable the people of Namibia to achieve freedom and independence."
During the First World War South Africa occupied German South West Africa (now Namibia) and then took over the administration with the mandate of the League of Nations until the Second World War, when the South African government decides to annex by unilateral decision of the government the territory of South West Africa to South Africa.
On August 26, 1966 the SWAPO (South-West African People's Organization), of Marxist inspiration, started an independence guerrilla war against the South African forces, known as the South African Border War. South Africa relented only in 1988, accepting a United Nations peace plan that led to the country's independence in 1990. Walvis Bay remained under South African control as an enclave, only to be ceded to Namibia in 1994.
