The festivity of San Lorenzo is a religious celebration that takes place every year in the town of Tarapacá, in the province of Tarapacá in the first region of Chile. In 2011, an estimated 70,000 people participated.
The patron saint of this town is San Lorenzo, a deacon of Spanish origin, who was martyred during the time of the Roman persecutions against the Catholic Church during the reign of Valerian. He was roasted to death on a grill on August 10, 258 AD in Rome.
The celebration of the festival begins on the 6th, when hundreds of religious dancers come to the town, coming from nearby cities such as Iquique, Calama, Arica, Alto Hospicio, Tocopilla, Maria Elena and in recent times began to integrate the city of Antofagasta, which for the days of the festival sleep in tents in the village.
One of the main attractions of the festival are the striking dances performed by the various Catholic groups during the celebration. This, to fulfill mandates they have obtained from the saint or as a demonstration of faith.
