The United Nations General Assembly invites all governments and organizations to observe annually August 9 as International Day of Solidarity with the Struggle of Women in South Africa and Namibia.
On December 17, 1981 the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 36/172 invites all governments and organizations to observe annually August 9 as International Day of Solidarity with the Struggle of Women in South Africa and Namibia.
National Women's Day is an annual South African holiday, celebrated on August 9. It was instituted in 1994 to commemorate a women's protest march held in 1956 against the compulsory wearing of passes foreseen for the country's black citizens during the apartheid era.
On August 9, 2006, a march commemorating the 1956 march was held at the Union Building, with the participation of Albertina Sisulu, Sophie De Bruyn and other veterans of the women's anti-apartheid protest of the 1950s. On that occasion, the square where the marchers had gathered (formerly known as Strijdom) was renamed Lilian Ngoyi Square, in honor of one of the organizers of the 1956 march.
