The Basilica of the Agony in Gethsemane, outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, hosted this July 1 the Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Christ, celebrated by the local Church that keeps this feast in its liturgical calendar.
As a result of the triumphant revolution in Italy in the 19th century, Pope Pius IX was forced to flee Rome, disguised as a simple priest, on November 24, 1848, and lived in exile in the Castle of Gaeta from 1848 to 1850. A few months after his exile, in February 1849, the Republic of Italy was proclaimed in Rome. It was during this turbulent period that the Feast of the Most Precious Blood was established on the first Sunday of July 1849.
The liturgy traditionally begins with the pouring of red rose petals on the stone beneath the altar of the Basilica, in memory of the agony and blood shed by Jesus on Holy Thursday on the same rock.
