Ica is a city in south-central Peru, capital of the department of Ica, located in the narrow valley formed by the Ica River, between the Gran Tablazo de Ica and the western slopes of the Andes.
Still under Spanish orders, the city of Ica was founded by Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera on June 17, 1563, with the name of Villa de Valverde del Valle de Ica.
After constant earthquakes destroyed the Villa, it had to be moved and finally in 1633, it was recognized as a city and established in the place it currently occupies. It was named San Jerónimo de Ica in honor of its founder.
The city of Ica includes five urban districts. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics, it is the eleventh most populated city in Peru and was home to a population of 453,947 inhabitants in 2021.
