Costa Rican Farmer's Day

Farmers play a very important role in the country's food, economy and progress. Law No. 4096 of March 6, 1968, decrees that on May 15, Costa Ricans celebrate the day of the Farmer, honoring those who work on the land and provide food.

On this date, the different educational centers program special activities to celebrate the farmers who day by day dedicate themselves to the work of sowing what an entire nation eats.

Costa Rica presents the scenario with natural and human resources that urge the production of most of the basic foodstuffs of its population.

Coffee, bananas, tobacco, sugar cane and cocoa are considered traditional products because they are the export crops of the late nineteenth century, so they have a lot of history, they are also of great significance for traditions and customs built around them, as non-traditional products are: cassava, bananas, macadamia, pineapple and others. The export of these products grew around 1950, so they are products of a less extensive tradition than the previous ones.

Basic grains such as rice, corn and beans are part of the daily diet of Costa Ricans. Their production is for local consumption, and for some years now, they have begun to be exported. The range of products is so varied that it includes spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and pepper, fruits such as strawberries, melons, papayas, pineapples and citrus fruits, as well as products such as cotton.
