The National Theater Day is commemorated by law since 2007 (by law number 20.153), every May 11, in honor of the birth of the renowned theater director Andrés Pérez Araya (1951 - 2002), who since the 80's incorporated elements of street theater, pantomime and circus to theatrical performances. He was the founder of Gran Circo Teatro and director of his renowned play "La Negra Ester", an icon of Chilean theater. Undoubtedly his work came to revolutionize the theater in the country, but what stands out most, all those who knew him and had the opportunity to work with him, was his passion and dedication, his conviction to bring theater closer to the people, a theater with social commitment.
