Legend has it that the Castle of Caravaca was besieged by Muslim troops. Food began to be scarce and they decided to go in search of food. They found wine near Lorca. On arrival at the sanctuary they found a large Muslim siege. Bypassing the enemy defense, running up the wineskins loaded on a horse.
The festival begins on May 1st with the bareback competition. May 2 is the big day of the festival of the wine horses. The first documentary references appear in the 17th century. Since then they have been evolving until today they are shown as a triple contest full of strength, beauty and emotion: the bareback horse, the harnessing and the race. The differential aspect of the wine horses is their harnessing, dressed with pieces embroidered with silk, rhinestones and gold and silver beads, custom-made for each horse.
The participation of the youngest ones takes place on May 3rd, which is one of the most emotional and pleasant moments of this unique festival.
