The Nahuat language is a cultural legacy that is still preserved by some of the indigenous communities settled in western El Salvador. It was transmitted through the migrations of Nahuatl groups from central Mexico, which populated the current Salvadoran territory at different times between the 8th and 13th centuries.
The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador decreed that every February 21 as the "Nahuatl Language Day", in recognition and promotion of its contribution to Salvadoran culture.
