It was instituted in 1957 by Francisco Neri Cano and has been celebrated every September 14 since that year. During the first celebration, in 1957, the members of the professional microphone guild also instituted the election of the queen of announcers and Elsa Aguirre was the first to be decorated with that title. In the 1960s, then President Adolfo López Mateos officially designated the day as a national holiday.
