Ukrainian borscht is a hot filling soup made with beef or pork, always with beetroot, which gives it a characteristic red color. The history of borscht goes back over 500 years. In ancient times, borscht was a memorial dish.
At the end of cooking the classic Ukrainian borscht, be sure to throw in some fresh lard pounded with garlic, salt and herbs. Let it brew a little and only then serve.
In January 2022, the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Humanitarian and Information Policy recommended that the Parliament adopt a draft resolution on the establishment of Day of Ukrainian Borscht (No. 6361). It is proposed to celebrate this holiday annually on the second Saturday of September.
The holiday provides for holding events, festivals and competitions for cooking traditional Ukrainian borscht in all regions of Ukraine.
