Officially, the birthday of New Kakhovka is in February, but the City Day, according to the established tradition, is massively celebrated on the last Sunday of September.
The city appeared on the site of the village of Klyuchevoy, founded in 1891, in 1950. They say that the village got the name Klyuchevoe for its crystal clear springs.
The city was founded simultaneously with the beginning of the construction of the Kakhovska hydroelectric power station as a settlement for builders.
