In the United States, “officially recognized” mental disorders are listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is published by the American Psychiatric Association. The DSM details all mental disorders and their diagnostic criteria; the fifth edition was published in spring 2013.
The history of hoarding stretches from before Dante to a Smith College psychology laboratory, and now the condition may be officially recognized as a legitimate mental disorder.
