Today's stories and adventures are as diverse as the world in which we live, and by reading them, we come to more fully understand the vibrant diversity of our Nation — and the world. This is especially important as young people learn and grow and engage with their own sense of identity.
When we make time to read with kids, whether on NEA’s Read Across America Day or any other day – children get the message that reading is important. When we read books that have characters of all races, genders, and backgrounds, students discover their own voices and learn from the voices of others.
National Read Across America Day, which takes place every year on March 2nd, is part of Read Across America, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. The single purpose of the day is to encourage reading in children.
