In Salvador, capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia, it is one of the most popular and valued of the year and attracts a huge crowd of believers and admirers to the beaches of Rio Vermelho.
The Iemanjá Festival was declared a Cultural Heritage of Salvador in 2020, written in the "Livro do Registro Especial dos Eventos e Celebrações" (Special Register Book of Events and Celebrations). The Special Register of Intangible Heritage by the Salvador City Hall is a way to preserve the tradition, which has been going on since the 1920s. Once registered, a safeguard plan is drawn up.
