7 June - Freedom of Expression Day in Mexico
Today Mexico commemorates the day of Freedom of Expression, a basic, constitutional, fundamental and inherent and necessary human right to human nature, enshrined in articles 6 and 7 of our Magna Carta. The first time it was celebrated in the country was a day like today in 1951.
On June 7, 1951, newspaper editors and the then President of the Republic Miguel Alemán Valdés instituted the day of freedom of expression. Half a century later, after a tortuous and complicated relationship, on May 3, 2002, prominent journalists and civil society figures encouraged the celebration of this inalienable right in Mexico, supported by the guidance of the UN General Assembly, an entity that since 1993 had agreed to commemorate World Press Freedom Day every May 3.
