A sort of carnival in Geneva, the Fête de l'Escalade is a mixture of tradition, humour and official commemoration. Costumes, chocolate pots and renditions of the Cé qu'è lainô are all part of this festival that brings the different generations together.
L'Escalade takes its name from the assault on the ramparts of the City of Geneva by the troops of the Duke of Savoy during the night of 11/12 December 1602. It celebrates the failure of the surprise attack by the troops of Charles Emmanuel I, the Duke of Savoy, in 1602. Every year in December, the Fête de l'Escalade commemorates the victory of Geneva with a blend of humour and tradition.
