8 July - International Town Criers Day
The first International Town Criers Day was held in the '80s in Waterloo, Ontario. Since then, the day has been observed annually on the second Monday in July. Long before the creation of newspapers, members of the royal court delivered official announcements to the public through officers called Town Criers or bellmen. A town crier would typically roam the streets shouting 'Oyez, Oyez' to draw public attention and convey the latest news. With the passage of time, printed media, radio, news channels, and the internet replaced town criers, and most people soon forgot their historical significance.
