30 August - Frankenstein Day
Frankenstein is recognized as (one of) the earliest science fiction stories. When people hear the word “Frankenstein,” they automatically imagine the hideous-looking monster. However, that is not the correct image. Frankenstein and the monster are totally different characters. Frankenstein is actually the name of the scientist who created the monster. Mary Shelley was only a teenager when she wrote Frankenstein in 1816. A ghost story writing competition prompted Shelley to write the novel. The idea for the novel came to Shelley in a nightmare.
Mary Shelley was born on August 30, 1797. August 30 was also the birthday in 1400 of Vlad II Dracul, father of Vlad the Impaler who is seen by many as an inspiration for Dracula. August 30 is Frankenstein Day, celebrated by many as a day to celebrate all things connected with Mary Shelley’s monster creation.
