16 September - Mayflower Day
The Mayflower set sail from Southampton, England, for North America on August 15, 1620. The ship carried Pilgrims from England to Plymouth, in modern-day Massachusetts, where they established the first permanent European settlement in 1620.
The Pilgrims tried living in the Netherlands before coming to America. Delays forced them to sail as winter approached. It took nearly three months to secure supplies and manually load supplies. Instead of crossing the ocean in June, they wound up battling the storms and cold of late fall. Only 50 of the original 102 passengers survived the first winter.
