'Let's have ice cream for breakfast' said once Florence Rappaport, the mother of six, to her bored and moody children on a cold and snowy February morning sometime in 1960s. The kids were complaining that it was too cold to do anything. Their mother’s surprising proposition must have cheered them up though. The next year, they reminded her of the day and a tradition began.
Today, Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is an unofficial holiday, celebrated in so many countries, that it is in fact international. Its popularity can be easily explained. Millions of people around the world love ice cream so much, that they would happily start with it every day of their lives. Indeed, ice cream has been scientifically proven to make people happy. In 2005, researchers at the Institute of Psychology in London scanned people's brains as they were eating vanilla ice cream and found that just a spoonful activated the same pleasure centers in the brain as winning money or listening to a favorite piece of music. Besides, The Telegraph once published a story claiming that an ice cream breakfast will make you smarter. According to the respected newspaper, a study by Professor Yoshihiko Koga at Kyorin University found that people who ate ice cream had faster response times and more brainwave activity than those who had more normal breakfasts. This, apparently, is evidence for ice cream's brain-boosting powers.
However, eating it first thing in the morning on a regular basis is probably not a very good idea. Many other researches have shown that sugar is harmful in many ways. Ironically, in the long run it will increase your risk of depression, reduce your brain function, and make you more susceptible to Alzheimer's. If you want to be smart and healthy, eating sweets every morning for breakfast is the last thing you should do.
Anyway, making ice cream a regular breakfast is not the idea behind the holiday. It is all about making this day a wonderful sweet exception.
