Escargot - an edible snail, especially one prepared as an appetizer or entree. We get it, they’re not the fastest animal on Earth. Heliculture is the science of growing snails for food. Snails have been eaten as food since at least ancient Roman times. It is believed that snails for eating were brought to the United States (California) in the 1850's.
There may be as many 150,000 species of gastropods, and they live in almost all habitats, from deep ocean trenches to deserts.
